Thank you for another excellent post and indeed story. It's always worth listening to quiet voices in the night, provided they're not telling you to murder everyone else!

The recipe for panperdy is interesting in that the bread is fried before having the sweetened eggs poured over it, rather than being soaked in egg first. We love Eggy Bread round here too, but I tend to season with salt, pepper, chili flakes or harissa, as I'd rather eat savoury than sweet.

Thank you, it’s lovely of you to say so. You are so right about the voices! I also love a savoury eggy bread, particularly with mushrooms but I’ll definitely try adding some chilli flakes next time.

I love the evocative description of the Baghdad courtyard and the unexpected end to the story. In the Bible there is a story about a man who buys an old field because he knows it contains hidden treasure.
